GO ASK ALICE……I THINK SHE KNOWS….What an awesome apartment the Rabbithole has become!!!
Rabbithole-001
The lights of the Big City have a tremendous pull and our daughter Michelle succumbed in the summer of 2010.  She quit her job at Quiksilver, rented her home, entrusted her beloved Beamer to a good friend, left southern California and headed to the bright lights of the Big Apple.  After much searching, she found the perfect abode in West Village, all 300 square feet and only up one flight of stairs with beautiful hardwood floors, high ceilings, good light and not one hanging closet. And so the Rabbithole was born!

The Rabbithole even came with a ornate marble fireplace.  The intricate crown molding in Michelle’s bedroom is to die for.
Bedroom Ceiling Trim
Even with all its delightful details, the next step was figuring out how the make it all work in that small space. It has been a marvelous adventure for Michelle, her step-dad Papa Gar and me!  We have been making the trip to NYC from sunny Florida about every three months since August 2010 and each trip brings a new project!

Our first endeavor was how to fit a full size bed, dresser, shoe storage, and a closet into a 6’x 9’ area.  Luckily, the Rabbithole is in a prewar building with gorgeous moldings and high ceilings so we were able to get creative and use the vertical space also.  These are some photos of the bed unit that the three of us built Labor Day weekend.

Frame is done, now it was time for the slats.  To make getting the stored items underneath the bed easier, the center set of slats are removable.  You need every inch of storage when you live in 300SF!!

Michelle always has time for a big smile!

Papa Gar and I trying to get the correct dimensions for the hanging closet!  As you can see, no plans for us.

Drawers are installed, now it was on to her shoe rack…

NYC Bed 3
It turned out nicely and since it slides on a track she is able to use all of that great space under the bed.  Besides, every girl no matter the age needs a place for her shoes!!!

Some of the other projects that we have completed in the Rabbithole include a console table in the entry area, the dining room table that she can hang on the wall as art when not being used for a multitude of projects, and a kitchen update.

    1. We have had so much fun working on the Rabbithole! And it has been the perfect excuse to go and spend time in the city with our daughter! I will be posting some more of our projects as I get a chance to work them up! Thanks for your lovely comments.

  2. It sure looks like you too advantage of every inch of that room that you could. I love seeing DIY furniture projects since this is a skill I don't have. I also liked seeing the chandy decal over the bed. I've seen those decals at the store, but never really known how to use them in my decor. It's pretty the way you used it. Thanks for sharing your ideas at my party!
